Updated 1/29/2020: Due to recent openings and findings, I thought it seemed fit to extend this list of frozen treat recommendations because, let's face it, if we're going to live in a city with mild winters, we may as well take full advantage.

Houston, we're officially in the dog days of summer. As if I had to tell you right? These past few weeks have been brutal, and I thought this would be the perfect time to share our top 9 picks for frozen treats that will help cool you down in the next month or so before fall!

Here they are (in no particular order):

1. Flower & Cream

One of the newest additions to the Houston ice cream scene, Flower & Cream is located right near Rice Village. There are currently somewhere around 15 different flavor options, and you can create any sort of creation you would like! Get your ice cream smooshed between two cookies, or stacked on a cone. Everything is made in house, from scratch.

3. Snowy Village

Snowy Village is all the rage in the shaved ice/bing su world. Their bingsu is one of the best. Huge portions, high quality fruit and ice, and incredibly delicious. Grab a little group of friends to check them out and split a bing su.

4. Creamistry

Creamistry may not be a Houston original, but it for sure has the creamiest ice cream we've ever had. The quality is impeccable, and there are so many different options! Plus, they make your ice cream right before your eyes with liquid nitrogen! It's a pretty neat experience.

6. Bae

Bae is one of the hottest new soft serve shops in Chinatown. Originally from LA, Bae made it's way down to Houston to open its second location. They are known for their black soft serve, but their other dazzling flavors and toppings are not to be dismissed. Create your ultimate dessert and snap a picture for the gram because this spot is nothing short of Insta-worthy. Thanks @houstonsgotspice for this awesome photo!

7. Fat Cat Creamery

To us, Fat Cat Creamery is the pioneer of handcraft, small-batch ice cream in Houston. They have been around for about 6 years, and continue serving up delicious year-round and seasonal flavors while supporting local farmers. Another great thing about Fat Cat Creamery is their commitment to sustainability. Their packaging is made from leftover wheat straw and is compostable, and they only use environmentally-friendly spoons.

9. Matcha Cafe Maiko

10. Cloud 10 Creamery

I first had Cloud 10 Creamery when Matt moved to Houston and before Houston Hotspots even existed! It was one of our first food adventures in Houston, so it definitely holds a special place in our hearts. While I was saddened to find that they closed the original location in Rice Village, I was stoked to find that they've moved and expanded to three other locations! For decadent quality scoops of ice cream and sorbet, you can't go wrong at Cloud 10.

11. PopFancy

Pop Fancy began as a little popsicle stand, and just last year, they opened up their very first brick and mortar in Asia Town, complete with ice cream and other yummy sweet treats. Don't forget to get that snapshot for Instagram with their holographic containers and colorful toppings! 😍

12. The DoughCone

The DoughCone opened up around the same time Houston Hotspots was born, and it's been cool watching both our brands grow over the years. I recently revisited, and it really reminded me how different their concept is! Instead of your traditional waffle or sugar cone, they use a cone made of dough! Since the last time I visited, they added a brownie dough cone, which is exciting for all of the chocolate lovers out there. Oh, and they are going to be launching another truck soon, which means double the dough cones!

13. Over the Moon

Here is the ice cream shop made for those with dietary restrictions. Over the Moon is a vegan ice cream shop! Enjoy floats, sundaes, cones, and more without any of the dairy. It's also important to note that most of their ice creams use a sunflower milk base, so if you have a peanut allergy, you can eat here too!

14. Jeni's

The newest addition to the pack! Jeni's just opened up in the heart of The Heights, and wow, was it an exciting opening! You may have seen Jeni's ice cream at the grocery store or even in your freezer, but you can now get hand scooped Jeni's ice cream, which you have to admit is 1,000% better than from a carton. They have tons of creative flavors to choose from, and if you're wanting to try a few different kinds, get a freshly made waffle bowl!
